Laurie White: CCRI President Listens to Learn

An op-ed by Chamber President Laurie White as published in the Providence Journal

Meghan Hughes is in her fourth year as president of New England’s largest community college system. She’s charting a new course for CCRI with an urgent focus on increasing access to college for students of all backgrounds.

President Hughes and the team — faculty, staff and students — have an unabashed hunger at the Community College of Rhode Island. They’re taking the right risks and motivating each other to be open to new ideas that come from all levels.

More than 700 course scheduling conflicts have been eliminated. Enrollment has increased 113 percent for first-generation, full-time, straight-from-high school-Rhode Islanders. Transfers to local four-year institutions have been seamless. Groundbreaking new partnerships with prominent Rhode Island employers are delivering on the promise of getting students into quality jobs. The 2019 graduating class is expected to be the largest in 20 years. The sense of urgency is real.
