  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island Welcomes New Board Member Rosie Fernandez

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BBBSRI) is pleased to welcome Ms. Rosie Fernandez to the Board of Directors.

“Both personally and professionally, Rosie demonstrates the spirit of our mission and the attitude we need to get it done,” says Katje Afonseca, Chief Executive Officer. “Rosie is an experienced community relations professional with a passion for building and maintaining relationships across the state.  We are lucky to have her join our talented Board of Directors.”

As the Manager of Community Relations for Cox Communications’ Northeast Region, Rosie is responsible for all charitable giving programs and initiatives throughout the service area of Connecticut, Ohio, and Rhode Island, and she also manages the company’s charitable giving program, Cox Charities. She currently serves as the President of Rhode Island Latino Dollars for Scholars, an all-volunteer organization providing scholarships to Latino students pursuing a post-secondary education, and additionally serves as an advisory member of the R.I.S.E. Women’s Leadership Conference. Rosie is a proud alum of the University of Rhode Island.

“I’m thrilled to join the team!” says Fernandez. “BBBSRI has an impressive history of building community and providing the support young people need to fulfill their potential. That’s the future we need, and I feel excited, privileged, and pumped to do my part!” Rosie embodies the values that drive our organization, having previously taken part in the Year Up program to mentor Yuselly Rivas—who later went on to join the BBBSRI team based on a referral by Rosie. Ms. Fernandez’ first-hand knowledge of the challenges and rewards mentors experience will no doubt strengthen our programing.

“We expect Rosie will be a phenomenal fit,” states Paul Oberg, Board President. He goes on to add, “For the past five years, Jay Allbaugh, Senior Vice President and Region Manager of Cox Communications, was an active BBBSRI board member. When his term expired, Jay was glad to pass the torch to Rosie, and we’re excited to have her with us.” The entire BBBSRI staff is pleased to welcome Rosie on board, and we wish her the best of luck as we move forward towards a brighter future together.
