Outgoing Providence College President Shanley Reflects on Today's World and His Tenure

The outgoing president of Providence College, Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., sat down with Chamber President Laurie White earlier this week to reflect on his 15 years at the helm of the college, the school's transformation under his leadership, the response to the pandemic and what may be ahead for his successor, Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard. This week is Rev. Shanley's final week as president.

Rev. Shanley also offered some insights into his experience with living and working during the time of COVID-19 these past months and the opportunities and challenges these circumstances present to all of us in our personal and professional lives.

    Highlights include:

    • Focusing on the positives...Rev. Shanley cites peaceful demonstrators, workers on the frontlines and being able to practice gratitude personally.

    • The past 15 years...Winning team championships, diversifying the college and the construction of new buildings on campus stick out as highlights to Rev. Shanley.

    • The college experience today...Colleges now, more than ever, give more support to students in the form of mental health counseling, career services, athletic facilities and food and residential amenities.

    • The Black Lives Matter movement...Rev. Shanley thinks and hopes that we are at an inflection point in history and that colleges and universities can and will play a big part in educating people on these issues.
