We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Keith Stokes on his appointment as Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation.

Over the course of the next year, the Chamber vows to be a positive and collaborative partner in working with him, the staff and the Board to improve the state’s performance in generating jobs and crafting the appropriate national profile.

Keith’s appointment is a logical and timely move and responds to the sense of urgency expressed by the community. He is a proven economic development leader and has done outstanding work in growing a number of vital industry sectors.

The membership of the Chamber would like to sincerely thank Al Verrecchia and the members of the RIEDC Search Committee for the six months of time and effort they put into the recruitment process.

Discussion around the resource base of the agency has unleashed a huge response from the community. We are confident that Rhode Islanders now understand that it will take a total team effort. Rhode Island has many significant points of pride and distinct advantages from a business development point of view. Those stories must be told.

We would hope --- and urge --- the candidates vying for Governor in 2010 to make the long-term funding and strategy of the RIEDC a centerpiece of their campaign dialogue. It is essential that Rhode Island’s effort be commensurate with national norms to enable the state to reach its full potential in economic development.
