“Crazy Cool Fish” are stealing the spotlight at Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium this month

The hippest fish in the Bay are taking center stage this January, as Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium highlights “Crazy Cool Fish.” Guests will learn all about the fascinating ways local fish camouflage, feed, communicate and more when they participate in a scavenger hunt, craft their own fish or sit in on a storytime this month.

Save The Bay’s skilled staff and interns will teach curious visitors of all ages about the oyster toadfish’s trip to space; the genius of the orange short bigeye that lives where orange light can’t be seen; a longhorn cowfish that masqueraded as a trunkfish until it began developing horns; and more. Guests will also have the opportunity to observe a new arrival: a young triggerfish. The triggerfish, usually found in much warmer waters, is distinguished by horn-like dorsal fins that move up and down to signal its mood.

Other activities—including a paper-plate-fish craft, a camouflage coloring page, a build-your-own-fish scavenger hunt and a reading of “Flossie Flounder: A Tale of Flat Fish” by Suzanne Tate—will encourage even the youngest visitors to explore all the “crazy cool” facts about fish.

Guests who are interested in getting an even closer look at Bay creatures can purchase tickets to this month’s Feeding Frenzy, taking place on Thursday, January 17 at 5 p.m. This exciting after-hours event allows visitors to participate in the aquarium creatures’ favorite time of day: feeding time. Tickets ($10 general admission; $8 for Save The Bay members) can be purchased at savebay.org/feedingfrenzy.

The Exploration Center and Aquarium is located in the Easton’s Beach Rotunda at 175 Memorial Blvd. in Newport, Rhode Island. The center is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday-Sunday, from Labor Day to Memorial Day.

General admission to the Aquarium is $8; $7 for seniors and college students with ID; and free for children under 3 and Save The Bay Family members. The Exploration Center and Aquarium also now offers free general admission to all military and first responders with current ID, as well as a reduced admission of $7 for their guests.
