Chamber President Joins Providence Mayor to Announce Jobs Now Providence
New initiative to use federal funds to subsidize local job creation
Chamber President Laurie White joined Providence Mayor David Cicilline for the announcement of Jobs Now Providence - a new initiative which will use $10 million in federal stimulus dollars to place eligible job seekers at local businesses between now at September.
Working in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Human Services, Jobs Now Providence will use federal dollars to significantly expand employment opportunities by subsidizing 100 percent of the wages paid to unemployed and underemployed workers who meet certain criteria.
"We keep hearing it over and over again -- it’s all about jobs," said Laurie White, president of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. "This funding will not only help unemployed individuals address barriers to employment, develop skills and gain work experience but it provide local employers with access to a pool of qualified workers and give them the necessary capital to invest in growing their workforce."
The program, which is being successfully used in several cities across the country, will run through September 2010.
