Chamber Helps to Present RIDOT Award

The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce was honored to participate in an award ceremony to recognize the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) held Friday, June 20th at AAA Southern New England.
Chamber President Laurie White joined AAA Southeastern New England CEO and President Mark Shaw in presenting RIDOT Director Michael Lewis Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri with “America’s Transportation Award.” The award, which was presented in recognition of the innovative way RIDOT moved the Providence River Bridge up Narragansett Bay in August of 2006, is sponsored by AAA, the US Chamber of Commerce and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

“The relocation of 195 is not only transforming the city skyline, but it is also positively impacting how people are access the city and surrounding areas and increasing the safety on one of the region’s heaviest traveled roads,”  said Laurie White, president of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. “The IWay bridge, and its movement up the bay, is a prime example of the innovative work the department is doing, making them much deserving of this honor.”

The region RIDOT won includes six New England States, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.  The competition has three categories: “On Time,” “One Budget,” and “Innovative Management.” Winners of the regional awards are now eligible for national recognition.
